John Cranko's choreographic setting of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is internationally acknowledged as one of the most important works in the history of ballet. In 1962 the choreographer, who had only been appointed Ballet Director in Stuttgart the previous year, took the Stuttgart audience by storm with this ballet.
Romeo and Juliet is undoubtedly one of the highlights in the entire repertoire and there is probably not a single ballerina in the whole world who would not put the role of Juliet down as one of her dream parts, or indeed a male dancer who would not love to dance Romeo.
