Resident Choreographer
Christian Spuck will create his third full length ballet for the Stuttgart Ballet, to be premiered on February 10, 2012 in the Opera House of the State Theater Stuttgart.
Inspired by
E.T.A. Hoffmann’s novella "Das Fräulein von Scuderi”, Spuck’s new work delves into a world of murder, intrigue and obsession. Published in 1819, Hoffmann’s novella is considered one of the first German mysteries: the 70 year old Madeleine de Scudéry is assigned by Louis XIV, king of France, to solve a series of mysterious murders involving the goldsmith Cardillac, an artist so obsessed with his work that he cannot bear to part with it and murders the noble commissioners of his fabulous jewellery in order to regain possession of it. When Cardillac himself is murdered, his young apprentice Olivier is accused. With her sharp intellect and warm heart, Madeleine de Scudéry solves the mystery and frees Olivier.
Spuck, who has previously been inspired by Hoffmann’s dark, fantastical and at times surreal-grotesque works, intends a kaleidoscopic approach in which elements of the suspenseful mystery are constantly rearranged. Sets and costumes for
Das Fräulein von S. will be designed by
Emma Ryott, with whom Spuck has had a long, fruitful and extremely successful collaboration not only for dance but also for opera.
SWAROVSKI SPONSORS COSTUMES
WITH PRECIOUS SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS
The famous crystal specialist Swarovski kindly sponsors the production, and thus enabled costume and set designer Emma Ryott to create the most exquisite ballet costumes.
Next to a beautiful necklace, in the story created by the brilliant but murderous René Cardillac and playing a crucial part in Das Fräulein von S., nearly 135.000 SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS were used to adorn four costumes of ballerinas depicting jewels - shining like real diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires.
