Alicia Amatriain was born in San Sebastian, Spain, where she began her first ballet training. Shortly after, she entered the John Cranko Schule in Stuttgart and graduated in 1998. She became an apprentice with the Stuttgart Ballet in 1998 and was invited to join the Company as a member of the Corps de ballet in 1999. In 2000, Alicia Amatriain was promoted to the rank of demi soloist and in 2002, she was promoted to principal dancer. In 2015, Alicia Amatriain was awarded the national title of “Kammertaenzerin” (the highest rank a dancer can achieve in Germany).
Alicia Amatriain received numerous awards and prizes for her outstanding work. For her interpretation of Lulu, Alicia Amatriain was named in the critics’ choice of the magazines ballettanz and Dance Europe as “Outstanding Dancer” of the 2003/04 season. In February 2006, she received the German Dance Prize “Zukunft” 2006 (“Future” 2006) and the “Premio Revelación” in her home town San Sebastian. In 2008 followed the “Premio Danza & Danza”, an award of the Italian magazine Danza & Danza. In July 2009, Alicia Amatriain was awarded the international dance prize “Premio ApuliArte”. In the critics’ choice of the magazine Dance Europe 2014 she was named as “Outstanding Dancer” for her interpretation of Katharina in John Cranko’s The Taming of the Shrew. In 2015, she won the German Theater Prize “FAUST” for her performance as the Devil in Demis Volpi’s The Soldier’s Tale; a role Demis Volpicreated for her. As a guest artist, Alicia Amatriain appears with the Bolshoi Ballet, the Paris Opera Ballet, the Cuban National Ballet, the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, and the State Ballet of Berlin. In addition, she has been a guest artist at the special event Roberto Bolle and Friends and at the World Ballet Festival in Japan.
