The 2018-2019 season – which began classically – closes out with an evening of unabashed contemporary dance. For the first time, Akram Khan will work with a German dance company, staging his Kaash for the Stuttgart Ballet. Tamas Detrich – to whom the expansion of the repertory in terms of styles and artists is of paramount importance – is looking forward to this first collaboration with Khan: “Akram has a unique choreographic voice, an original style and an approach to dance which I find not only fascinating but also perfect for the Stuttgart Ballet.” Khan’s fusion of classical Indian Kathak with contemporary dance has made him one of the most sought after choreographers in Europe today. His Kaash will be a company premiere; Khan himself will work with the Stuttgart Ballet dancers, an event the company regards as one of the absolute highlights of the season.

The triple bill includes a further company premiere: Johan Inger’s Out of Breath. Six dancers jump, climb and hurl themselves on, over and against a wall – and each other - in this intense study of the fragility of life and the ever present specter of death.

The evening closes with a revival of Itzik Galili’s Hikarizatto, which the Israeli choreographer created for the Stuttgart Ballet in 2004. Set to driving percussion music and incorporating an ingenious lighting design through which the dancers, jump, slide and throw themselves, Galili created a work utilizing and stretching to their absolute limits the astounding physical capabilities of the company’s dancers. All three works have one thing in common: they are sure to leave the audience breathless!
