2020 was to be the year in which the world celebrated the genius of Ludwig van Beethoven on the occasion of his 250th birthday. The Stuttgart Ballet was among those prepared to celebrate this famous German composer, having in its extensive repertory two masterpieces to his music by Hans van Manen. Adagio Hammerklavier and Große Fugue – the ballets carry the same title as the music they are choreographed to – exemplify perfectly van Manen’s exquisite musicality and his ability to elicit the soul and structure of music through dance. As always, his works are infused with a subtle eroticism, a haunting tension and purity of line.
These two masterpieces are joined by a world premiere by Mauro Bigonzetti who will also let himself be inspired by Beethoven for his new creation. Known for his striking, sensual and equally musical works, this will be Bigonzetti’s sixth world premiere for the Stuttgart Ballet. Both van Manen and Bigonzetti have had long and fruitful artistic relationships with the company over the last 39 years; this will be the first time their work is seen together in Stuttgart.
Projected performances: March – April, Play House
