As of September 2018, the State Theater Stuttgart has three new Artistic Directors – apart from Tamas Detrich for the Stuttgart Ballet, Victor Schoner takes over the Staatsoper Stuttgart and Burkhard C. Kosminski the Schauspiel Stuttgart (theater company). It was the heartfelt wish of all three new directors to collaborate in their first season together. Their choice fell upon the perfect work: The Seven Deadly Sins. Originally created as a “sung ballet”, the world premiere in Paris in 1933 was a collaboration between the choreographer George Balanchine, the composer Kurt Weil and the playwright Bertold Brecht. The main character – Anna I and Anna II – was danced by Tilly Losch and sung by Lotte Lenya. The work tells the story of a young woman who leaves her home in Alabama to earn money for her family. On her journey, she is confronted with the seven deadly sins: sloth, pride, anger, gluttony, lust, covetousness and envy. Affluence is the primary objective; all personal interests or desires are subordinated in the quest for prosperity. The work still functions as a mirror for our present day society with its never ending quest for material satisfaction. The new Stuttgart production will be directed by Anna-Sophie Mahler; Stuttgart Ballet Demi-Soloist and choreographer Louis Stiens will choreograph.
