Like phases of the day from morning until evening, and like dance itself, moments are fleeting and always in transition – over in the blink of an eye. This evening presents works dealing with life’s transience, and how we perceive our present realities. With one world premiere and two Stuttgart premieres, BLINKS OF AN EYE shows the beauty of movement from three distinct and perceptive choreographic voices.

Internationally acclaimed choreography duo Sol Leon and Paul Lightfoot present their work in Stuttgart with Shut Eye, an intimate encounter that explores light and shadow. The work explores Paul Gaugin’s surrealistic statement: I shut my eyes in order to see. Do our senses illustrate the world around us, or is it our emotions?

Young choreographer and Stuttgart Ballet Demi-Soloist Vittoria Girelli creates her first work for the Opera House stage. With her fresh and grounded choreographic voice, Girelli draws inspiration from mythology and art to forge new ways of seeing the present world. For this world premiere to a commissioned score by Davidson Jaconello, Girelli explores how matter can emerge from primordial chaos, finding texture and form from the idea of the inanimate becoming animate.

Finally, world-renowned choreographer Christopher Wheeldon brings his work to Stuttgart for the first time with Within the Golden Hour, a one-act ballet to the music of Ezio Bosso that celebrates the end of the day, with its golden glow of light that seems to make time stand still. Through shifts and mutations, the choreography’s moving shapes highlight the tenderness of human interaction and the transience, of both dance and life.
