Vita

Born in Graz, Austria, Wolfgang Stollwitzer received his initial ballet training there and continued his studies from 1973/74 at the John Cranko School in Stuttgart. He joined the Stuttgart Ballet in 1979. His repertoire of principal roles included Onegin, Lensky and Gremin in Onegin, Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, Siegfried in Swan Lake, Lucentio in The Taming of the Shrew (all by John Cranko), Prince Desiré in The Sleeping Beauty (Marcia Haydée after Petipa), and Albrecht in Giselle (after Coralli, Perrot, Petipa).

Roles created for him include John Neumeier’s Medea (Jason) and Fratres, Jiří Kylián’s Stepping Stones, Hans van Manen’s Corps and Shaker Loops, William Forsythe’s Whisper Moon, Maurice Béjart’s Operette, Uwe Scholz’s Seventh Symphony, and David Bintley’s Edward II.

In 1995/96 he joined the Birmingham Royal Ballet (formerly Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet), where he danced all the major classical roles in the repertoire, from Ashton, Wright, and MacMillan to works created for him by David Bintley, including Troy in Far from the Madding Crowd, Arthur Parts I & II, The Nutcracker Sweeties, and Shakespeare Suite.
In 2004 he retired from dancing, completed a Master of Arts degree at the University of Birmingham, and subsequently completed the teacher-training course at the Royal Academy of Dance in London. He worked as a guest teacher with a variety of companies and, in 2008, returned to the Birmingham Royal Ballet as Ballet Master.

In 2021 he rejoined the Stuttgart Ballet as Assistant to Production and has served as Ballet Master since the 2022/23 season.
